Foundation
Class of 2021
Chanebelle Murphy-Salazar
In this past school year I feel as though I've grown a lot as an artist. When I began I lacked confidence in the work I produced, but thanks to the teachers at ECU, I've become more self assured. The feelings of dread when handing in assignments and believing my work isn't good enough, have been stripped away. I'm now confident in myself as an artist.

Entering an art and design university made me really nervous. But I was helped by a supportive community that allowed me to create works I felt connected to and passionate about. This has made me value my artwork more.

Coming into my Foundation year I thought I knew a lot about art and different practices and disciplines. But, after two semester's worth of learning and observing, I realized there was still a lot I didn't understand.

With fear of what was to come, I began my year with a pessimistic approach to what seemed like a rather dull start. However, through adaptation I found comfort in the unknown and discovered the power of digital art and it's ever so prominent future.

In this special covid-19 year I learned how be a 'cheap' artist. Without campus access or other art material stores, I used what I could find at home. I love to explore weird and cheap materials.

My first year of university has been amazing in the most unexpected ways. It's unfortunate that it had to be fully online, but I met some great people and created works that surpassed my own expectations. I am so happy to have joined such a beautiful community.
